英文母語者說「這個做法有問題」，很少直接講 This is wrong.，更常說 This might not be the best approach. 這種聽起來比較委婉、留餘地的講法，語言學上叫 hedging，中文可以理解成「緩和語氣」。這篇整理常見的說法，讓表達更自然、也更有禮貌。
為什麼要緩和語氣
直接的陳述句聽起來很武斷，容易讓人覺得說話者太自信、不留討論空間。緩和語氣不是「不敢講」，而是留一點彈性，讓對方比較容易接話、提出不同意見哦。
This is the wrong answer. — 這是錯的答案。（直接）
This doesn't seem quite right. — 這個好像不太對。（緩和）
常見的緩和詞彙

The results appear to support our hypothesis. — 結果看起來支持我們的假設。
Sales tend to drop in December. — 銷售額在十二月通常會下降。
用 tend to、appear 這類詞，比直接說 Sales drop in December. 更留有彈性，暗示這是一種傾向，不是絕對的規律。might、could 這類情態助動詞的基本用法，情態動詞入門那篇有整理。
委婉提出請求或建議
要請別人做事，或指出對方的問題，緩和語氣特別常用：
I was wondering if you could help me with this. — 不知道你能不能幫我一下。
You might want to double-check the numbers. — 你可能會想再確認一次數字。
It could be worth considering another option. — 或許值得考慮另一個選項。
比起直接說 Check the numbers again. 或 Do it this way.，這些說法聽起來更客氣，也給對方留了台階，職場信件、學術寫作裡都很常看到哦。
學術寫作裡的緩和語氣
學術論文常用緩和語氣，避免把研究結果講得太絕對，因為科學論述通常留有例外或不確定性：
The data suggest that the treatment may reduce symptoms. — 資料顯示，這個療法可能有助於減輕症狀。
seem、suggest、may、appear to 這些詞在學術寫作裡很常見，比起直接寫 The treatment reduces symptoms.（斷言式的講法），加了緩和詞的版本更符合「研究結果只能說明趨勢、不能保證每個案例都成立」的科學態度。
過猶不及：太多緩和詞會顯得不自信
緩和語氣用得太頻繁，反而會讓人覺得說話者沒有把握、猶豫不決：
I sort of think this might perhaps be a bit of a problem, maybe. — 疊了太多緩和詞，聽起來反而很沒自信。
一句話裡挑一兩個緩和詞就夠了，重點是語氣留有彈性，不是每個字都要軟化哦。
